Prince William Sound Sea Kayaking Expedition

Join the Prince William Sound College Outdoor Leadership Program for an immersive five-day educational sea kayaking expedition through the spectacular waters of Prince William Sound. This hands-on field course combines paddling instruction, expedition travel, outdoor leadership, and environmental education while exploring one of Alaska's most remarkable coastal ecosystems.

The course begins on July 28 at Prince William Sound College, where participants will meet their instructors, review expedition logistics, become familiar with kayaking equipment, and receive instruction in paddling techniques, safety procedures, and trip preparation. On July 29, in partnership with Pangea Adventures, participants will travel by water taxi to Sawmill Bay, where they will launch the expedition and begin applying foundational sea kayaking skills in a real-world setting.

Over the following days, participants will paddle through the protected waters of Prince William Sound, traveling from Sawmill Bay to Jay Bay and onward to the stunning Shoup Bay. Along the way, students will develop skills in paddle strokes, navigation, route planning, weather assessment, campsite selection, Leave No Trace principles, and expedition living. Instructors will also provide opportunities to learn about the region's glacial landscapes, coastal ecology, marine wildlife, and the natural and cultural history of Prince William Sound.

Participants will spend two days exploring Shoup Bay, including its impressive tidewater glacier, waterfalls, and diverse marine and terrestrial habitats. The expedition concludes on August 2 with a paddle back to Valdez, where students will reflect on their learning and complete a rewarding multi-day wilderness journey.

Traveling by sea kayak offers a unique perspective on Alaska's coastline, allowing participants to experience the Sound at a slower pace while observing sea otters, harbor seals, bald eagles, seabirds, and, with some luck, whales in their natural environment. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, ancient forests, and pristine waters, students will gain practical outdoor skills, increased confidence in wilderness travel, and a deeper appreciation for the natural systems that make Prince William Sound one of Alaska's most extraordinary places.
